Post-Hurricane Redevelopment

British Virgin Islands

Supported the development of a renewable energy sector within the British Virgin Islands following the devastating damage caused after hurricane IRMA.  Key deliverables were the development of the BVI Renewable Energy Regulations, the implementation of the Feed-In-Tariff structure and the design of an ambitious Green Energy Plan designed to significantly increase renewable penetration through capacity building and development of a supportive commercial renewables sector.

Off-Grid Integration

United Kingdom

Designed and implemented a carbon and cost reduction programme for off-grid concrete batching plants for a leading UK PLC and name in the minerals and natural resources sector. Reduced generator sizing by over 80% whilst integrating solar PV and battery storage to provide a harmonised solution that afforded silent running away from the period of batching, brought about by automated controlling of the generator through the delivery of a smart microgrid. The system yielded a sub-3-year payback and savings of over 19,000 kg CO2 per annum.

Eco Luxury Resort

Belize

Design and the oversight of implementation of the electrical infrastructure and off-grid power generation capacity across a 80 acre private island develop of a luxury hotel complex. A 1.5 MW solar PV system incorporating 3 MWh of battery storage capacity with a diesel generator, harmonised to provide a primary clean energy source and redundancy through the micro grid. Included international procurement and logistics to deliver effect at the site only accessible by sea across from Belize City. Optimised for occupancy and using overgeneration to provide additional services to reduce cost and storage options.

Containerised Off-Grid Classroom

British Virgin Islands

After the damage caused by Hurricane Irma, we were eager to use our expertise to help out the local people of Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Island (BVI). Working with the Virgin Unite, we created an off-grid library and computer lab by creatively transforming an old shipping container into a self-sustaining classroom.

The new library and computer lab is completely powered by wind and solar energy and is the first public building in the BVI to generate 100% of its own power needs from renewable sources. This centre will furthermore serve as a vital resource to future proof energy supply and create resilience to this community should another hurricane or natural disaster occur.

Capacity Building

British Virgin Islands

Following on from the destruction of Hurricane Irma in 2018 we were commissioned through the Foreign & Commonwealth Office to provide capacity training building on-island. This was to bring about enhanced technical understanding and knowledge of the integration of renewable energy generating systems in the built environment in order to enable the local installers and government agencies to build out solar PV and battery storage systems to bring about a green economy and transition to net zero.

Optimised Zero Export Integrated Systems

British Virgin Islands

Working for Recovery Development Agency we delivered proof of concept containerised systems that would provide grid-tied solar generation, coupled with battery storage and generator integration, harmonised together whilst ensuring there was zero export of surplus energy fed back into the electricity transmission network. This created a resilient power system cable of operating on-grid but also in island mode as it's own micro-grid.

Tesco PV Programme

Multiple Locations, United Kingdom

Project management of commercial-scale roof-mounted solar PV systems using optimised Solar Edge systems. Delivering 300-500 kW installations on live operational supermarkets across the UK to Tesco global engineering standards as part of a bank-funded PPA delivery programme.

Zero Export Generating Systems

SouthWest, United Kingdom

Delivery of a 220 kW zero-export solar PV system to a poultry farm. Delivered using Solar Edge export limitation technology to throttle generation in line with demand to balance across the three phases and ensure zero energy exported to the weak national grid infrastructure surrounding this farm. Working with the District Network Operator we implemented an additional remote G100 compliant fail-safe system as witness tested by the network's engineers. The system was also harmonised with the existing on-site generator, connecting at the mains side of the unit to ensure no back feed or interaction at any time of its operation being required and enabling the alternative power source to run in full off-grid mode should it be required.

Powerboxes

British Virgin Islands

Delivery of multiple solar and wind integrated off-grid systems to medical centers on the remote islands and locations across the British Virgin Islands in support of the Ministry for Health and Social Development. Systems were in ruggedised and modular containers enabling them to be moved easily including by underslung helicopter load, enabling flexibility whilst providing energy resilience down to the community level in case of natural disasters.

Cold Store Chain & Asset Refurbishment

Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo

Supporting the park director Emmanuel de Merode we were part of the development team implementing a cold store chain from Vitshumi to Goma, enabling Tapia fish to arrive cold thereby bringing about economic development to remove combatants from the conflict with rebel militias such as the Mai Mai tribe threatening this community and its nationally famous fishing cooperative. We were responsible for the design of the 250 KW solar and storage micro-grid along with the refurbishment of the Park Ranger's own micro-grid in the Rwindi frontline camp that provided essential life support to conservation operations.

Solar Schools

Himalayan Gorkah Region, Nepal

Sustainable Pathways in conjunction with the Gurkha Welfare Trust was appointed to design, oversee and project management in-country the delivery of off-grid solar systems for multiple schools in Lapubesi in the remote region of Gorkha, an area synonymous with the infamous Nepalese Gurkha soldiers and at the very epicenter of the devastating 2015 earthquake. Challenging logistics saw movement by helicopter with the final climb into the mountainous Himalayan region taking place with equipment being hauled into location by bamboo canes with a ten-man team along with a mule train.

Hydro Refurbishment

Lapubesi, Nepal

In support of the Nepali Government and funded as part of a World Bank Programme, we were the lead technical advisors and responsible for the project delivery of the refurbishment of a 30 kW hydro plant. The turbine, plant house, and channels all had to be rebuilt including the use of explosives to clear debris after it was destroyed in the 2015 earthquake, stripping this remote community of 3,000 homes of power for 3 years. HRH Prince Harry was part of the delegation of UK veterans in support of our team as part of this undertaking.
